...La "nature" a-t-elle besoin de l'art? L'art ne doit-il pas être une expression de la nature par le biais de l'action humaine? La démarche artistique de Léa Kristmanson part d'une question simple mais profonde sur le paysage et la perception.
Elle s'intéresse aux variations de la lumière, aux marées et aux ambiances de la baie de Fundy, transposant son drame silencieux sur des toiles de grand format et des œuvres sur papier.
Léa ramène le paysage là où il reste obscur et non thematisé, le résultat bien qu' énigmatique est porteur de louanges de la nature. Espaces contemplatifs où le monde extérieur et la perception intérieure se rencontrent.
Outre la peinture, son oeuvre englobe des travaux sur papier, des vidéos et des médias numériques, tous ancrés dans un intérêt de longue date pour la perception, la philosophie et l'expérience cognitive du lieu.
Léa Kristmanson creates atmospheric and ethereal oil paintings that explore landscape as both physical place and inner experience. Her current paintings focus on the shifting light, tides, and moods of the Bay of Fundy, translating its quiet drama into large-scale canvases and works on paper.
Her practice begins with a simple but profound question: Does nature need art, or must art be an expression of nature through human agency? Working from this inquiry, Kristmanson retraces landscape “back to where it remains obscure and unthematized.” The resulting paintings are enigmatic yet deeply of nature — contemplative spaces where outer world and inner perception meet.
In addition to painting, her work encompasses works on paper, video, and digital media, all rooted in long-standing interests in perception, philosophy, and the cognitive experience of place.
Background
Léa Kristmanson holds a B.A in Arts, minor in Philosophy from the University of Ottawa, a Masters in Art history and Semiology from UQAM, and a post-graduate diploma in 3D animation from Sheridan College.
She has studied with master teachers including Ko Nakajima, Klaus Von Bruch and Ulrike Rosenback and has taught at the Université du Québec, UQO, the Ottawa School of Art, and the University of Regina.
Previously based in Edinburgh she maintains studios in Ottawa and the Bay of Fundy.
Her installations, videos and painting projects have been presented in Canada and internationally with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec.
